dc.description.abstractThe study was on teacher performance appraisal and its influence on academic performance of students in public secondary schools of Mutito Sub -County in Kitui County. The research questions: - how does teachers‟ appraisal on planning of teaching and learning materials influence students‟ academic performance? How does appraisal of teacher‟s professional knowledge influence students‟ academic performance? What is the role of teacher performance appraisal in influencing better academic performance? What challenges influence the implementation of teacher performance appraisal? What are the possible solutions to mitigate the challenges? Theoretical framework was based on the Goal setting theory of motivation. Literature was reviewed thematically with the guidance of research questions. Mixed method research design was used in the study. The targeted population included; 25 Principals,25 deputies,255 teachers and 1 S.C.D.E. Stratified, simple random and purposive sampling was used to identify the sample. Data was collected using questionnaires, interview guides and documented analysis. Cronbach‟s Alpha Coefficient of 0.779 was used to test for reliability. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and findings presented in tables, charts, percentages and frequencies. Qualitative data was analyzed using narration, presented in summarized themes. Findings revealed that teacher performance appraisal has influence on students‟ academic performance. Challenges faced by teachers were identified as lack of knowledge on appraisal process, poor relationship with appraiser, lack of implementation teams, and lack of training on performance appraisal. The researcher recommended availability of appraisal materials, discussion of appraisal reports, adequate training, inductions and workshops on appraisal, motivation and promotions by T.S.C for teachers who meet the set targets.
