dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this research was to examine the influence of Cultural strategies of training discipline on students’ behaviour modification in public mixed-day secondary schools in Nandi County, Kenya. This is in the light of concern that indiscipline cases are increasing in schools, despite existence of Guidance and counselling programmes. The specific objectives that guided this study were to; determine the influence of preventive, punitive, restorative and religious cultural strategies of training discipline on students’ behaviour modification in public mixed-day secondary schools in Nandi County. Four hypotheses were tested. Multicultural Theory guided the study. Sequential explanatory mixed design was used.The target population comprised 74048 students and 90 teacher-counsellors and deputy principals. Yamane formula was applied in obtaining a sample size of 398 students. The sampling procedure comprised of census, purposive, proportionate stratified random sampling. The questionnaire was administered to students to gather quantitative data and interview guide was used to collect qualitative data from the teacher-counsellors and Deputy principals. The reliability of instrument was established using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and content validity by expert judgement. Quantitative information was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS version 26. Thematic content analysis was done for qualitative reports. A One-Way Analysis of Variance was used for inferential statistical analysis. Results indicated a statistically significant difference between the four cultural strategies of training discipline; preventative (F = 61.52; p =.000), punitive (F = 108.76; p =.000), restorative (F = 97.017; p =.000), and religious (F = 95.425; p =.000) strategies. The cultural strategies of training discipline differences was found to be statistically significant to students’ behaviour modification. The study concluded that cultural strategies of training discipline had a major impact on the alteration of students' behaviours. Based on the findings, the study recommended that educators and community elders should use culture-based ways to influence the behaviour of children within the context of the physical school environment. The results may be beneficial to the Ministry of Education, principals, deputy principals, community elders, and counsellors in terms of how to alter, improve and monitor the conduct of students in schools and communities.
