| dc.description.abstract | This research project is about “Influence of selected social factors on the performance of students in national secondary examinations in hospital ward, Kiminini sub-county, Trans-nzoia County.” Social factors have an influence on the performance of learners in national examinations. Identifying which social factors affect national exam performance and implementing interventions to promote educational equality is crucial. This research process is guided by four objectives which include: To examine how family social status affects the performance of students, to determine the influence of peer relationships on academic performance of students, to examine influence of social workers’ role on academic performance of students and to establish the influence of parental involvement on academic performance of students in national Examinations in Hospital Ward, Kiminini Sub- County. The theoretical framework of this research is guided by the behavioral learning theory and the social learning theory. These theories provide a foundation of reference for the literature review, methodology and discussion sections. The research contains a literature review on a universal outlook of articles on the aforementioned topic. The research will apply a cross-sectional descriptive design and will utilize a mixed methodological approach in the data collection process and analysis. The study participants will be selected by simple random sampling and clustered sampling and closed and open-ended questionnaires. The data collected will be examined using thematic analysis for qualitative data and descriptive and inferential statistics for quantitative data. The study found that both parental education and income levels were significant factors in determining access to academic resources; however, their correlation with academic performance was weak (ρ = 0.09). Most parents (76.6%) and teachers (92.8%) reported that peer relationships can affect academic performance. Parental involvement was found to be associated with improved academic 13 outcomes, attributed to guidance and collaboration with teachers. Social workers a have a significant role to play but their role utilization is limited with only 28.5% of students reporting being able to engage a social worker. The study recommends increasing parental involvement to enhance academic outcomes and equity. Formalizing the social worker's role in schools would help improve how their skills are used. | |
